great apartment, terrible area

I lived here for one year and I'll give it an honest evaluation.

APARTMENT: The quality of the unit is great. Everything was new when we moved in, fresh paint, new stove, etc. It's very spacious, although the living room layout is kind of weird and inconvenient.

MAINTENANCE: The few times we've needed repairs, maintenance has been timely and professional. No complaints there.

MANAGEMENT: The management is friendly enough, but sort of lazy. To be honest, I haven't had to deal with them often. I pay my rent on time and that's that. There are a couple security guys that walk around at night but they're useless. Someone tried to kick in our door once, I've seen kids jump over the fence, etc.

GROUNDS: The neighbors are rather messy, leaving trash and such around the halls. There are landscaping guys constantly working, which is nice because they keep the place clean, but annoying because they're running leafblowers outside your door at 8:00am.

NEIGHBORHOOD: Don't be fooled by the cool colors and look of the building! This place is basically the ghetto. There's constant noise from the parking lot: loud cars and car stereos, people yelling, trucks driving in. There are many other residents in the complex who are unbearably loud. I don't understand it, but every conversation these people have is held at maximum volume. Little kids often run or ride bikes through the halls, crashing into things and yelling. The worst is the kids who don't live here that jump the fence to use the pool and hot tub. When you try to throw them out, they start yelling and cursing and throw all the deck furniture in the pool (true story).

OVERALL: The apartment itself is fine, albeit a bit overpriced ($1915 for a 2bd2bath). Unfortunately, the area is way too loud and just sucks in general, which is why I'm leaving. If you want to live in Emeryville, DON'T LIVE HERE. You can find comparable apartments further north in better neighborhoods.
