We've lived here just over a year now, and unfortunately will probably be moving soon because of my husband's job. We looked at other places in Foster City, Redwood Shores, and Belmont, and eventually decided to get a nicer apartment with less square footage -- and Marlin Cove is just that. Its by far the most expensive place we looked at in March 04, but its also the nicest. We just re-signed our lease, going month-to-month since we may be moving soon. They offered us another six month lease for the same amount we were paying before, and the month-to-month for $25 more a month. It was refreshing to not have our rent jacked up at the end of the lease.
Parking has never been a problem. If I get back late in the evening I may not be able to find a place inside the gate, but the non-gated lot always has lots of spots, all close to the buildings. My husband has never had a problem with anyone parking in his spot in the garage. I've never seen any abandoned vehicles, or any signs of vandalism.
We've had minimal noise problems, but we do live directly overlooking the clubhouse/pool entrance. Teenagers like to hang out on the couches there and can make a lot of noise, but management has always been helpful during business hours (minors are not allowed at the clubhouse without an adult), and after the 10pm noise curfew the Foster City Police have always been very quick to respond. The fire alarm in the clubhouse has gone off twice in the past year, which was really annoying.
You can hear the sirens of police and fire vehicles (the PD and FD are right down the street) even with the windows closed, but no other street noises. We don't hear any airplane noise, and only minimal noise from the water way (there's a crew team that practices on weekend mornings), and from the dog park across the water.
We've heard our neighbors through the walls all of twice since we've been here, and both times it was just barely loud enough to be heard, and we fell asleep anyway. Found out by running into our neighbor in the hall that there is a newborn baby in the apartment next to us, but we've never heard her. We've had people move out on our floor but we've never heard any moving noise.
The walls are thick but the doors are thin, so you can hear people in the halls, and if someone slams their door it will rattle your door as well. If you stand out in the hall you can hear everyone talking or watching tv, but once in your own apartment you can't hear a thing unless someone is talking in the hallway.
The office staff is very nice if sometimes ditzy. Maintenance staff is very professional, and even after I'd gotten mad at them for (what I thought was) not fixing my phone jack after three maintenance calls, they came back up to the apartment, tested their phone, tested my phone, and then gave me a new phone cord, since it was the phone cord and not the phone jack that was a problem (doh!). Haven't had anything need maintenance since moving in over a year ago. Anytime we see anything broken on the grounds (like a broken spring on a gate), it is fixed within 24 hours without us having to call or anything.
The residents are generally fairly nice. People smile at each other in the garage and on the elevator, but are generally pretty private. The only problems we've had are things like people leaving their junk mail on the floor by the mailboxes (which I think shows a lack of respect for the complex); people propping gates and doors open for visitors, rather than keeping the gates and doors closed like they are suppose to be; adults letting their teenagers hang out at the clubhouse even though its against the rules; and people holding classes in the private swimming pool.
All in all, this is a great place to live. Just walking into the building feels like walking into a hotel. We decided we were willing to pay more for less square footage so that we could be in a newer, classy complex, and we haven't regretted the decision once.
