For the most part I love my apartment here. I have one on the top floor with a fireplace and high ceilings in the bedroom. Have never heard a sound from the neighbors on either side.
One problem is that there are quite large gaps between the boards on the balcony. I have plants out there, and no matter how hard I try I can't keep leaves and bits of dirt from falling on my downstairs neighbor's balcony. Watering the plants is really hard lest I drip on her and have her yell up through the balcony slats. I deliberately got a top floor apartment because I just spent two years living under someone and I know that sound travels downwards.
They raised my rent after the first year by $150 and again after 6 months by another $125. So I'm looking for a new place.
You have to pay for all utilities. My utility bills come to about $200 a month, and several are shared by the building, so you can't cut down to save money.
Before I moved in, I called and asked if I could get the keys on the last day of the month, Saturday, so that I'd have the whole weekend to move in. The woman on the phone said that was fine. When I arrived, appointments with utility companies all set up, they said that I couldn't get the keys until the first (Sunday). In the end they had to write up a whole new contract and charge me for the extra day, and I had to run to the bank and have another bank check made out for the one-day's rent. Ridiculous.
I find it helps you to set your expectations if you remember that you're dealing with a big company somewhere on the other side of the country. They don't really care if you stay or go, they just want the most rent possible.
They put some really nice touches on the complex; the granite counters, marble fireplace, and the high ceilings are lovely, though they've cut corners elsewhere. Things do break and I've had to work quite hard to get them to come fix them. Some, I just gave up on after many phone calls.
The security is pretty crazy. Makes it hard to order pizza. You have to buzz people both in and out of the main gate, and they have to get out of their car and go to the touch pad at the gate to call you. And then you have to buzz them in again at the building. It's Foster City - I'm not sure what we're trying to protect ourselves from!
I wanted a nice, clean place with a fireplace and washer/dryer in the apartment, and lots of privacy, and my apartment is that and more. But it's not perfect, and it's become very expensive.
