How to avoid getting ripped off here...

When last month prior to lease expiration comes deduct from the rent check the amount of your deposit or any other costs you think is owed you.
In other words, if your rent is $1500 and your deposit is $500. You pay them only $1000 for last months rent. Explain to them what the deduction is for. Have them bill you for any additional move-out costs. They can't give you a notice to quit or pay, you're already leaving! Just make sure you already have another place lined up when you do this.
This is exactly what I intend to do. That way if they want to charge me for something I think is over the top I'll just refuse to pay it. Let them take me to small claims court if they think they can win. Word to the wise: Do not trust these people. They will rip you off if you let them. Didn't use to think that way. But opinions change.
