Maintenance poor, but otherwise great

I moved into a 1-bedroom apartment ($1395/mo)last spring. After visiting other apartments in the area and being treated discourteously by the staff, I was blown away by how friendly the staff here were (specifically Daniel; I haven't dealt much with the other staff). Whenever I run across office staff on the grounds I am always greeted by name and with a smile. Grounds people will also smile and wave.

There was indeed a lot of remodeling going on this summer and for some months previous; getting the air conditioning put in required some patience and unexpected delays, but my building was one of the last and they managed to get it in right before a heat wave, which was nice. I loved that I had a huge bathroom, and while the most useful closet was in the bedroom, there was also a large closet on the patio and the laundry room had shelves and other storage space. It was not only adequate, but everyone who came to visit me gawked at how gorgeous the apartment was and several considered moving to Fremont just so they could live here (it's way cheaper than across the Bay).

I later moved up to a 2-bedroom apartment ($1690/mo) and have been similarly pleased. There was a wiring problem which took a couple of weeks to resolve, but again, with a bit of patience and understanding it was finally taken care of. This apartment is also beautiful, with lots of closet space (if smaller bathrooms). The washer and dryer are old, though, and won't be replaced unless they break.

The neighborhood is safe; young families are always out on walks on afternoons and weekends. It's very convenient to have the park right across the street. One should be careful when driving, though, as the schools for the deaf and for the blind are also across the street. For those who are paranoid: the police headquarters, a hospital, and a fire house are all within a half-mile or so. The grounds have always appeared well-maintained, and there's lots of trees for shade and privacy. Visitors have sometimes complained about neighbors' dogs barking, but it doesn't bother me.

Parking is something of a crap shoot; around my first apartment it was spacious and readily available, but it's more crowded near my current apartment (the rule is that each apartment is assigned one covered spot near the apartment, and any extra cars have to hunt for uncovered parking). Even in the dense portion where I am, I've always been able to find a spot and I've never had to park more than a couple hundred feet away from the foot of the stairs. It's a pleasant 15-minute walk to the BART station, just far enough away that there's no BART train noise. Sometimes at night you can hear the Amtrak, though.

The only real problem I've had here is maintenance. I've found the staff friendly and the area beautiful, and what neighbors I've met have been friendly enough (there doesn't seem to be much socializing between neighbors, which is fine by me). There are lots of pets, particularly in the 2-bedroom apartments, so those with allergies or sensitive to noise may want to look for a pet-free complex. As for maintenance, it's gotten better as they've hired a couple extra people, but for a while there was just one guy doing maintenance and it would take him forever to get around to all the units. I had him once cancel a maintenance request without any action, probably because he was just too busy. We haven't had a tremendous need for maintenance once the usual moving-in things were taken care of, anyway.

In summary, I've been extremely happy at Sun Pointe Village, although dealing with maintenance can be trying. If you have an important issue that isn't being resolved, you may want to ask someone in the office to call maintenance then and there to be sure you're not being overlooked. I've always had pleasant dealings with the office staff, particularly Daniel, but your mileage may vary. Oh, and before people start making accusations, no, I don't work for Sun Pointe Village. I just found apartment-ratings.com to be very useful when I was looking for an apartment, and thought I should return the favor.
