you know. After reading alot of these reviews, i have NO idea what they are talking about. I think your experience at the Californian depends on the location of your apartment on the complex. I was there for 6 months last year and the only reason I moved was to be closer to my job in Newport. There are spiders in the summer in the trees but i've never seen one in the house. I saw alot of termite poo in the outside storage closet, but none in the house. Besides, i'm just renting, what do I care if their building is getting eaten to shreds'' The wood flooring, mirrors, sink and countertops are nice. Closet is weird with the western swinging doors. The bathroom got alot of mold in it and i had to do a full-on mask and bleach water scrub about once every 2 months. The bathroom fan doesn't work like it's supposed to. I was in unit 20H. It is upstairs and overlooking the pool. I never had a problem with noisy or rude neighbors. There were some teens later at night who were a bit loud at the pool, but security (yes, there is one security guard) shooed them off after a fair warning. There is a gym that is always open and a dry heat sauna. The laundry machines by the mailboxes were always open as well. I never had a problem with packages. My ex's mother worked for Kraft and sent me food all the time. I never stepped in dog poo. I was also right next to the basketball court and the bouncing ususally stopped when it got dark since there isn't a very bright light hanging over the court. My unit was right next door to the sample/showroom unit. I heard the managers come and go with prospective tenants all the time. Guest parking sucks though. You get one assigned spot with your apt. (regardless of how many bedrooms you get) and you have to have a pass in your window. If you park in a guest spot for more than three days you are warned. More than 6 and you are towed. So, if you have more than one car and one is in the assigned spot and the other is on the street or in a guest spot on the complex, make sure you tell management if you're leaving for vacation. They will watch your car for you and won't call the tow company. At night the complex is very dark. There IS an open walk-in gate as another review mentioned. One time, I walked out to my car to see a man with a broken window on his truck and a police officer taking a report (this was within the complex). Guest parking is on the streets mostly. There ARE spots IF you know how to parallel park. If you don't know how to parallel, you're screwed. I've seen older women doing it all wrong, trying to drive forward into the spot. BACKWARDS people, you BACK into the spot at an angle and then straighten out. Anything that needed to be fixed was done immediately with no complaints. This place is overpriced though. We paid $1400/mo. for a 1bed/1bath 760 SQFT. Considering the safety concern and the lack of parking, not really worth it.
