I read all these ratings prior to moving in here, and after having my husband come down and give the okay on everything- we held our breaths and moved in. BIG mistake! The pools/hot tub/landscape is refreshing and I enjoy how you can open both the living room window and kitchen window and smell/feel the nice ocean breeze flowing through the apartment.
But, it is really unfortunate that all the other problems are not worth staying for, because the location is absolutely ideal as well- across the street from the gorgeous central park, down the street from the beach/pier/Main St, as well as the outdoor mall and the 405. The location is the ONLY reason we are really still here, but we are definitely not renewing. As of now we are even actually contemplating breaking the lease because of our neighbor to the side of us always complaining about us or our roommate. We are the quietest people out of any couples we know, and we are tormented by the 4 loud and constant yelping, barking, outside dogs belonging to our neighbors below us (their dog and her 3, now 5 mth old puppies)- yet we haven't complained and are instead getting complained on by our neighbor to the side of us for our bass being too loud (when we only play music at a very moderate level from our computer/laptop speakers and Ipod stand), that we are talking too loud, and that our television is too loud (but we have to then turn it to a volume where we have to really strain to hear our movie/TV show).
It is a miserable living situation, as the walls are paper thin, the front door is not even cut to fit (huge gaping slits on top and bottom I can see outside through) which is probably why people hear our television so well. We have to sleep with ear plugs and loud fans to each side of us to block out the sound of the dogs, since we realize we have to sacrifice for our own decision to live here, but our neighbor that constantly complains makes our life even more miserable for things we can't control- needing to keep the windows open for proper ventilation since there is no AC, and paper thin walls- so we now have to listen to music with ear phones if we want to turn music on, and all doors and windows have to be closed when we watch television or even talk past 10- making it stuffy and warm. Yet management still thinks we are still loud obnoxious people whose apartment needs to be inspected, because we are obviously not living to their standards (even though it isn't to our neighbor's standards and I doubt anyone who has lived here has renewed their lease with her living there.)- the last complaint last night was that we TALK too loud. We are FAR from loud talkers and are just speaking in normal voices with our windows open- I have to strain just to hear what my husband tells me to my face a lot because he has such a quiet voice, and I was in the Air Force working in a Top Secret station for 4 years so I got pretty darn good at talking in a quiet voice all the time and getting used to only the sound of machines for 12-16 hours days 6-7 days a week which sensitized me to loudness. I understand people being loud and playing extremely loud music, entertaining in loud voices, like our neighbors below us that party all the time, but we are nowhere near even being in their same league since we only listen to music for leisure (not entertaining), as well as watching television, and of course talking.
Aside from that, cosmetically, there are a gazillion layers of paint on everything in this apartment that management appears to do as an alternative to cleaning since you see lumpy crud stuck all throughout the layers and a greasy yellowish substance that manages to seep through all layers of paint in various spots. The two tops layers are a glossy paint covered by a flat paint, making the flat paint peel right off in various places on our doors/bathroom/kitchen cabinets, etc, and our shower head is so far down (we are 5' 8" and 6' 0") that we have to sit down or kneel to take a shower. It looks like they also took a base paint and painted the entire shower/tub/sink with it because you can see paint drips all throughout each, and when we try to bleach anything it turns yellow- we now have a nasty yellow tub. So UN-ghetto really. Window panes, base boards, and the kitchen itself is just filthy in all the corners, and paint mess ups are everywhere. When I moved in I had to get granite imitation contact paper to put on all the counter tops since they were white metal ones still from the 60's 70's era and it made me sick having to cook in there with those scratched up stained surfaces AND the horribly painted, filthy cabinets.
There are so many other things, like the maintenance people coming and not even speaking English so we couldn't even describe our problem to ensure it got fixed, but I'm done for now- it's putting me in such a sour mood just thinking about it all and we are trying at all costs to not break our lease. However, good luck to you in your search and please, if you can- try somewhere else...the 2 story town homes may be nicer and you don't have to worry about so many neighbors all around you, but we are looking forward to leaving regardless.
