I have lived at Shadow Mountain for about 1 and a half years. The experience did not start out that great (make sure you get documentation for everything). THe management is very disorganized but I think they are going through some changes for the better. Maintenance is very prompt, but just hope that it doesn't rain much in SoCal or your ceiling might leak. Also, summer can be horrible because there is no central air. There are many families and a few rowdy college kids, but over all it is pretty quiet. There is a skunk problem in the summer and the smell radiates through the buildings but you get used to it. THere is also a stray cat problem so make sure you keep your animals inside. Parking is also a pain if you have more than two cars or a friend who comes to visit. It is a gated community and the management is stingy with the gate code for non residents. THe grounds have many flowers and nice view of the mountains. Its also impossible to sleep in on Thursdays because of the grounds crew. Some of the apartment entrances and parking areas are kind of dark but I have never heard of anyone having any problems with crime. With all of that said you can probably find better, but not for the price.
