Not unhappy

Years at this apartment: 2008 - 2009

Disclosures:

1. I've lived in Marin most of my life, but it's been 15 years since I've rented in Marin.
2. I have dogs.
3. I was aware going in about the ongoing construction/renovation issues.
4. I've known people who've lived in this complex at various times between 1981 and now, so was not unaware of the shoddy original construction.
5. I pay $1800 base rent for a 2 BR 2 BA townhouse.

That said, I signed a six month lease six months ago for a pre-renovation unit. Onsite management promised me this building would not be scheduled for construction during my lease period. So, my review.

Pros: Supremely convenient location, very pet friendly, quick and efficient response to maintenance requests, love the office staff (Maureen and Robin), have friendly neighbors, no roaches or rodents in evidence in my apartment, available laundry facilities when I need to do 4 loads, pretty good trash pickings (I could furnish another apartment with what gets tossed the last week of the month).

Cons: Limited parking due to construction, construction noise from adjacent development on Saturdays starting at 7:00, painted! kitchen counters, really old fixtures and appliances, really thin walls (I can hear my neighbor's Blackberry vibrate on his nightstand), dangerously degraded wooden walkways, always overflowing garbage facilities, $110/month for water/sewer/garbage (twice what I paid in my house on 1/3 acre with washer/dryer and lawn).

Equivocations: Though the apartment fixtures are old, cheap, and sometimes damaged, they are clean. Not moldy or pest-infested. If you work a regular 8-5 schedule, the construction noise won't be an issue. Your noise experience will depend on how loud/quiet your neighbors are.

I will be leaving at the end of my lease assuming my condo purchase goes through. It worked for what I needed it for.
