1900 Ocean - Overpriced!

Years at this apartment: 1999 - 2002
I moved into a one bedroom in 1999 for $800 a month, which I thought was a really good price and I was very happy. After one year, they raised my rent $100, and then they started the renovations. If I had stayed my apartment would have been about $1500. I don't care how much renovating they do, there is no way this place is worth that money. First of all, there is no air conditioning and the building has no air ducts so it never will have air conditioning -- and unless you have an apartment facing the water it will get really really hot when the sun hits it. My apartment faced west and when the sun set it was like a sauna. Also, prepare to have to wait up to 10 minutes for an elevator in the morning or on weekends when there is heavy usage. Noise is a serious problem, and not just from all the renovations -- there is just a ton of street noise and garbage trucks early in the morning. Personally, I think the building was very attractive in a 1960's modernist way, but the redecorations are really tacky and "fancy". The place looks dreadful. Also the quality of the renovations inside the apartment, from what I saw, was nothing special. Also, the neighborhood is not great--there isn't much that you can walk to, and the ghetto is really close by (5 blocks). It is on the beach but that beach is pretty disgusting--if you want to really go to a beach you have to take a drive down to Orange County. I think this place was very good before it became 1900 Ocean and the rents were reasonable, but now it is way overpriced for what you get!
