Archstone rent amounts... ummm, what'

I haven't actually lived here. I'm in the process of looking for a new place to live. Most of the reviews for this complex seem very reassuring, and at first I was excited that this might be the perfect place for me. But the issue of changing rents had me (and still has me) concerned. Check out the going rates for one of the 2 bdr units, depending on length of lease:

$1,430 for 6 months
$1,555 for 9 months
$1,680 for 12 months

I called the office and said, "I'm confused. I'm looking for a long-term rental. I thought managers liked long-term renters. But if I sign for 6 months my rent is $1430, and if I sign for 12 months my rent is $1680... $250 more PER MONTH for signing a longer lease'" She seemed caught off guard and didn't know how to answer except to say that yes, that was correct. Which of course left me wondering... if I sign a 6-month lease, what happens in month 7' I asked her this, and she said it depended on what the market was like at that point. The management of this apartment chain seems to have itself confused with the stock exchange. Subjecting rents to such arbitrary criteria and causing people to feel that they might move in only to discover that they can't afford the rent in 6 months seems like a really stupid business plan, unless perhaps they've discovered that by keeping people's deposits and pulling a bait and switch they gain more money than they lose. Certainly the constant turnover must cost them money. In any case, I'll be looking elsewhere (and not at an Archstone complex) for more reasonable, trustworthy, tenant-friendly management and a place that I can actually plan on staying for a few years, because moving is a PAIN and I want my apartment to feel like my home, not just part of someone's portfolio.
