Before you sign any lease at Camden Harbor View in Long Beach, Ca, please read the following:
I filled out my application to rent at Camden Harbor View, December of '06, I moved in approximately January 9, 2007. I regret to say I do not remember the leasing agent's name, the lady who drew up my lease. She was kind, sympathetic and open to my spotty credit history, as I'd been, (and still am, though my children are now grown), a single mother for over a decade. She did let me know that my application was accepted however, with conditions of a larger deposit and initial payment on lease.
To move in, I paid around $2,300 plus a deposit that brought total move-in costs to around $4,300.
I loved living there. It was so close to everything, we made friends with the locals quickly and easily. I even went so far as to defend the Camden Harbor View staff against criticism on A-----t http://Ra-----.com, much to the angry response of those who'd originally given it.
Right around the end of my second one-year lease. because I DID sign two, consecutive, one year leases there, I was running late on rent. I'd been late a total of around 8 times, each time 5 or 6 days past the 1st, each time paying the late fees without a problem. I mention this because a lawyer I spoke with commented on how this could condition an individual into believing being a few days late on rent is ok, why not, when they'd ok'd it several times before, always with a smile on their faces.
This last time, in early October of '08, give or take a couple of weeks, I was later than the 5 days. I called on the 6th day confident that given my history, my lease signing history and otherwise, that all would be ok, I called to tell Jennifer Brown rent would be handed in that day. She said no, that I would have to move. I thought I heard her wrong and asked her to repeat herself. She did. I asked why. She said that it was simply too late and that I'd waited too long. I was still certain she had to be kidding and asked again. She confirmed that she was serious.
Jennifer Brown then proceeded to tell me that if I didn't move out within about two weeks, with a verbal/written notice given to her as well within about 2 days, that I would be evicted, along with my college-student daughter and my youngest, who at the time was a junior in high school. I began pleading with Ms. Brown, stating that she was also a single mother and that the holidays "are right around the corner, I'm nearing the end of a 2nd one year lease", but she would not budge.
To make matters more challenging, approximately 3 weeks had passed and I was set to move into a Lyon property closeby. The day before my move-in date, the staff called Ms. Brown and asked her if I'd ever been late. Instead of perhaps explaining ANYthing about me or my history or the ending situation in detail, she simply went silent, refusing to answer. At the last minute I had to change plans, at the last minute I had to explain to my daughters that we were to continue staying in a hotel.
I have documents, I have a lawyer, I just don't know if I have the energy or nerve, but apparently Ms. Jennifer Brown did and still does, as she is now assistant manager, under James Anderson.
