They will take you to the cleaners when you go to renew

I've lived in Camden Apartments for 2 years now and it is a great location, near the Pike, and from the outside a decent looking place. The place was horribly maintained for my first year here, but I have to say, it has improved in the last six months (summer/fall 2007). That's about all I can say on the positive.

Others have said it, I'll say it too, the staff here turns over very, very regularly and ranges from totally incompetant to mediocre. Staffs definitely turn over in property management, but this is the worst I have seen in any place I've lived in LA over the years and staff turnover doesn't have to be a given; there are actually buildings where the staff has been there for years (try 600 Ocean down the block if you want a competant, long-term staff). The greatest danger you face is lease renewal. My first renewal notice offered a month-to-month rate double my original rent! Every renewal has been like this -- sign up for a year and you get a marginal increase -- sign up for anything less than a year and don't be surprised at 10-40% increases. Unfortunately, because of my work, I knew I was going to be moving, but didn't know when. Camden took full advantage of that. It was disgusting. I know you are reading this and considering moving here... but, I urge you DON'T.

They will also take your deposit. One way or the other. A month after I moved in, it was apparent that the steam job done on the carpet was merely to cover spots. At the 1-year mark I renewed, and got a complementary steaming. And the same spots (lots of them) came back. When I moved out, I was charged for those spots. I was also charged for apartment cleaning (it was spotless and cleaner than when I moved in). They get away with this because there is no final inspection which includes the tennant. They'll do a pre-final with you, but the final is done long after you're gone, and you're not there to witness, make on-the-spot corrections, or document disagreements. Even though they'll take your deposit in cleaning fees anyway, you still need to clean up really spik-n-span! There's been cases where Camden went after more money over-and-above the deposit. Are you really serious about moving into this place? Send your questions to camden.sucks@yahoo.com . I'll be glad to answer. Trust me, you don't want to live here. I now live just down the street, but sleep so much better, and love coming home so much more, and don't dread having to interface staff of where I live.
