I'll admit this place was scary at first, but only because I come from a small town in eastern Virginia where I (a white person) am not the minority. After living here about 10 months I have come to realise that its actually quite nice compared to some of the surrounding buildings. It is very well maintained, and family owned. The brother, Paul, who handles maintenance has actually asked me if he could take care of the running toilet in my unit. Imagine that! A maintenance person actually offering to help you, instead of you hounding them to fix something. The rent is stupid cheap, $500/month for a bachelor apartment with paid electric. The building is kept very clean and has tons of character, it was built in 1910. MacArthur Park is not the greatest area, but it has gotten a lot better in recent years, and its very close to a metro stop, the 101, 110, 10, and 5. A couple of problems I have with this place are: the noise (native american drum ceremonies every monday, daily ice cream truck with one tune on a loop for several hours, concerts, protests, and demonstrations, the lapd copter hovering overhead), only 1 year leases no 6 month, limited parking (if you get home at 4 am forget about find a spot on the street without walking several blocks), no ac and no window units allowed it gets hot as hell. Anyway, I think this place has been really convenient for me in the big picture, and I was lucky to find it. My lease is up in 2 months, and I'll be moving as far west as I can afford, but I will always hold a place in my heart for the Ansonia.
