I moved out of this apartment after breaking my lease. They made me pay 2 months rent as a penalty. I understand the penalty and that's not why I'm complaining. I had to move out of there. The apartment is full of USC students and the hall ways smelled like weed. All the time. I have made several complaints to the management and they did nothing. I have a daughter and it was not worth living there. The management did nothing. Can you believe that' I paid rent on time and yet they did nothing. When I went to the leasing office to file a formal complaint I was advised that they will make a note of it and there's no need to file a complaint. All they did was make a note of it. There's always someone parked in my parking space. They do not tow cars. The security told me to find parking outside. Why should I park my car outside when I pay rent' What is the purpose of having assigned parking' This is the worse building in downtown. The property manager ----- is up to no good. She's terrible. I have called the main office and everyone who is employed with Essex is all the same. When I received my final statement including my deposit deductions, they charged me $290 for cleaning a 2 bedroom 2 bath unit. I only lived there for 2 months and I hired a professional cleaning company to come and clean. I asked for the recepit/invoice from the cleaning company but was advised that it cannot be provided. It's the law to provide receipts when asked by former tenants if the total is over $125. Also, they charged me for touch up paint and carpet cleaning. So after all deductions, I actually needed to pay them $49. By the way, the walls are so thin you can hear your neighbors. What an apartment. Please stay away. And if you have kids, this is not the apartment for you.

Man, I feel for you! As a non-student, young professional currently in the building , I wish that those of us who know how to respect our living space and who are completely over the issues (such as the ongoing smell of weed) could have banded together to get something changed around here. I'm sure this is just a pipe dream though, and management will continue to see a mass exodus of responsible tenants.
I agree that every interaction I have had with the leasing office has been futile. Twice now (and this is just recently) I have asked about small things and they say they are happy to help, but then I find out nothing was ever done. Once, I asked if they wouldn't mind checking in with security since it seemed that pool hours were not being followed. When I checked back in with the office a few days later they had no knowledge, let alone a written note, of my inquiry. It's little things like this that make me wonder what on earth they're doing down there all day besides printing out misspelled posters.
