I lived at Crystal House Apts from 1985 until 1989. It may be completely different now. It was an experience I won't forget. My friend and I, both from Wi, moved to LA in Summer '85. We were definitely minorities in this neighborhood. This is waht we could afford. It wasn't all bad because I was young and "bulletproof", which is a good thing. I had roaches--Bad! I saw one the sixze of a mouse onthe stove. I never cooked there again. However, I learned that roach poison bait kept them at bay. The pool was okay. You could take a bus downtown quickly, if you have any reason to want to go there. You could also easily go to McArthur park and --------- woudl fight over who got to sell you a dime of pot. The manager at Crystal was white and extremely racist. I partied with her son, who got acid from one of the tenants named "Angel", a man who claimed he sold 'cid to John Lennon. It was unbelievably potent. The son eventually became adicted to crack and robbed my apartment several times with the keys he stole from his mother. There was also a drunk black guy named Roosevelt who got drunk all day long, talked, and occansionally yelled to himself. Police helicoptors flew the neighborhood constantly, and prostitutes took johns to the sleazy hotel accross the street. Overall, it was a neat place to hand out at, if you are young and bulletproof.
