I just want to say that GCS Apartments is one of the best deals I found. It is a great historic building and at a great location. My favorite bar (Redwood) is down the street and everything is walking distance. I am 2 blocks from the Metro (train) and I can take it to Pasadena to visit my parents. Also, I heard from City of LA that they are planning to re-open the Million Dollar Theater downstairs. There's a great farmer's market downstairs and some amazing pupusas! However, do not live at this place if you are sensitive to noise. You will hear traffic constantly moving across the streets and pedestrians making quite a ruckus. I live on top of the building and believe me, the noise travels! Upon moving in, my stove & A/C does not work. It's been over 2 months since I submitted my work order request and no one has shown up to do anything. On top of that, I did not get my mailbox key. The manager on site is a sweet girl; however, do not rely on her to do anything promptly. She will merely blame it on the maintenance guy. On top of that, my kitchen sink is leaking, I contacted the maintenance emergency number and I have not heard a response from them. I still do love my apartment because I enjoy the view and location. The security is one of the best I've seen. The elevators and hallways are always clean and fresh smelling. If you want to have friends stay over and they're driving' Forget about it. It's such a hassle and they only validate for a certain amount of hours. If you want to do it the cheating way, just swipe your friends in and out of the parking lot. And if you hear someone on the intercom asking what you are doing, just tell them to shut up. The best alternative to parking is finding street parking but that to me seems a bit sketchy when it's late in the evening.

I'm sorry to hear how service has deteriorated. During my years in the building, I went through four managers. All of them were top-notch and service was excellent, as in same day for most things unless it was something major. It sounds like there is only a token property manager. In the past, there was an assistant and a full-time manager, who lived in the building. Sounds like the property manager is trying to cut some corners.
Glad to hear you found the pupusas. They are excellent. The revueltas is my favorite. (I had one this weekend, too.)
Yes, overnight parking is not good. The problem is rooted in the fact the parking is open to the public and generates revenue. Hopefully, they can come up with a better system.
Don't hold your breath waiting for the Million Dollar Theater to open any time soon. Nor Angel's Flight. This little funicular railroad has been out of service since 2001. Too bad, since it was incredibly useful.
