I've lived in this building since September of 2003 and, though the old owners weren't the greatest either, the manager was allowed more assistance and seemed more concerned with keeping things sanitary and in working order.

There used to be a regularly scheduled extermination on the last Friday of every month for whoever wanted it. Although I never saw the need in my apartment and didn't want chemicals sprayed in there for the odd bug I'd see every now and then, I guess it kept the pest population under control.

There now seems to be nothing I can do to rid my place of what I believe are mostly roaches. It's probably because the garage, where the dumpsters are located, is generally filthy, with access to the dumpsters often difficult and the lids down so many of us can't possibly lift them, especially when trying to hold onto other things, like the trash we want to put in there.

There are also plumbing problems galore and never any Maintenance Request Forms available. I've never been able to get ahold of the building manager, either and never received acknowledgement of phone messages I have left. I think it may be possible that it's because my notes and messages have been in English and when I've had interaction with the manager he hasn't seemed to understand me.

I guess the time has come when it's essential to be bilingual if you want to be a happy resident of Los Angeles, though many of the people in my neighborhood seem to only know Spanish.
