Yo!

Caveat Emptor

My sentiments echo those of the majority here. We moved into PW in June of 04' and from the beginning, things were terribly wrong. We were given an apartment different from that which we were shown. Within three days of moving in, our cars were being vandalized in the "secure" parking area. It was not unusual to be woken up 2-5 times a night by the groups of OTIS, AIU and Loyola students who enter/exit the building inebriated at all hours. Vomit outside our front door on several occasions. Broken bottles in the hallways that were not cleaned up for twelve hours or more. People rolling joints in the fitness room at the main pool in the middle of the day, with kids around. Elevators that even at their best were marginal. Their is little or nothing to do within walking distance after 5PM. Poorly maintained facilities, and the kicker - when we raised all of these issues with the manager of the building AND sent a letter to the corporate office, we received no response from the corporate office and the management of the building attempted to insinuate that our complaints were unfounded and completely illegitimate. I can tell you from personal experience that the property manager for this building has a completely laissez-faire attitude about everything - I honestly think she/he must be on some grade A hallucinogens to be able to deny the realities of the environment that she/he has fostered and helped create. One other thing you might like to know is that the rent fluctuates hourly (yes, hourly) - this comes from the mouth of the property manager and was raised because we were quoted a price on Monday, and while signing the lease on the following Saturday, overheard another management associate quoting a completely different (significantly) price for the same floorplan. Security is non-existent - it consists of some dude in a nylon windbreaker wandering around with stereo headphones on and no inclination to do anything remotely resembling security (the security is handled by an offsite contractor). There are no cameras other than in the lobby - when I suggested that they install a few cameras in the parking areas to deter vandalism, they scoffed at me. Noise levels are intolerable - even if you can withstand the constant traffic and aviation noise (noise levels approaching 110db, 20 hours a day), the kicker is the constant noise from the predominantly collegiate tenants (regardless of what management may say, the building is inhabited for the most part by twenty-somethings who are partying all hours of the day, and just generally rude and inconsiderate) and the gangs of entrepreneurial Comptonites in their pimped out Escalades, hanging out on La Tijera for hours, "talking" with people with the bass pounding. If you have the good fortune to live on the South or West side of the building you will gain vast knowledge of the aviation industry - primarily in the areas of flight scheduling and the sounds of different aircraft (hope you like the smell of jet fuel and the sound of Boeing 747-400s in morning :P ). The place is not and does not feel safe and for the price, you will feel completely violated within 2 weeks of moving in there. We gladly paid the fee to break our lease after six months. I wish I had found this site before we signed our names on the dotted line. For the money, you can find a much better apartment in any of the South Bay communities, closer to the beaches - do NOT make the same mistakes that others have made - stay away from this, and any other Equity Apartments community!!!!
