Suspect Housing Discrimination

I don't live here, but I was looking at an apartment at this complex to rent with 2 other people for a total of 3. If the manager is reading this posting, then she will definitely remember who we are.

We intended to have someone to live in the living room by partitioning with a bed sheet or something, but the manager said this complex does not allow it. She gave some reason saying that professionals live in this building and they want to save the buildings image. Having the living room as a bedroom makes it look like a dorm-like atmosphere and they didn't want that. I don't remember her exact words, but that's pretty much what she said. I actually spoke with the assistant manager of this complex a few days before, because I was showing a prospective roommate the apartment. She asked if I was doing the 1 person per bedroom and 1 in the living room thing. I said yes, and she said that's good and a lot of people do that.

After leaving we went go to look at another complex a few blocks away. We specifically told the manager of this other apartment complex that we intend to have someone live in the living room. She told us that this was fine and said no one can tell you how you live in your apartment. It s perfectly legal to use the living room. She went on to say that anyone that tells you otherwise is discriminating against you and this was illegal. I'm really debating whether to report this matter. We have a total 5 witnesses who were there when the manager would not rent to us for said reason.

Sometimes I wonder why they keep showing the unit, while they are still renovating it. Well obviously you want to attract potential tenants early; however, every time I came back with a potential roommate, the unit was constantly littered with tools and other equipment. She just said since no one has rented they just kinda slacked off on the renovation process and put more resources to something else. Once the paperwork is in order, like application I guess, the renovation can be speeded up so it can be ready in time. That's all good, but I think most people would want to see a finished apartment before filling out an application with a fee. I looked the other way at this, because the rental price for unit was cheap for the area it was located in.

Oh if you are intending to rent at this place, try getting leasing/renting information from both the manager and assistant manager. Both of them will tell you different information about the holding deposit, and pricing depending on the number of tenants. I must admit that the assistant manager is far more friendlier than the main manager of this complex.
