I love this place! After moving from a loft downtown (where I was paying about $400 more a month for the same-size space), I've found the rent to be fairly reasonable considering there isn't a deposit for having pets and this IS Los Angeles after all. As for the buildings previously being rent-controlled, again welcome to LA. If you want to live somewhere cheap, move to Bakersfield or Valencia. I don't pay for a parking spot as the building-owned parking lot has limited spaces and the privately-owned lot is too expensive. Street parking is really just fine -- I've never had to park more than a block or two away. Yes, it can be noisy because EVERYONE has a dog (but can you really hold that against them'), but I've just learned to keep a set of earplugs next to the bed.
There are also tons of great Korean restaurants in walking distance; the Wilshire/Western metro station is two blocks away; and if you like concerts, the Wiltern Theatre is also two blocks away. There's also a church and a private school across the street if either of those things are a requirement for you.
The building is going through renovations, slowly but surely, so the kitchens and bathrooms are new. There's also a gym in the middle building -- not too big, but never busy.
The only big cons: not all of the apartments have washer/dryers in-unit (we lucked out), but there is an on-site facility. Also, it is an older building, so there isn't central air. Warmth isn't a problem, though -- there are radiators in most apartments, so the walls are nice and hot! And of course, there's the aforementioned parking issue, but if you don't have an issue with street parking, then no worries! Seeing that there are a lot of dogs, there is a lot of dog poop outside left by lazy or forgetful owners, but I've never seen dogs off-leash.
Otherwise, this really is a great place to live! I'd highly recommend it to pet owners, young professionals, or even families!
