Living in Los Angeles can be scary, so feeling secure in your home and the neighborhood means a lot to us. My wife and I have lived at Westwood Villa for almost 6 months. Although our apartment is very nice and the staff is warm and friendly, what impressed us the most is that the building is very secure; my wife can walk to and from the supermarket at night and feel completely safe.

Secure? Really? Getting on the freeway you can see all of the patches from cracks due to poor structural engineering that almost caused the building to be condemned many years back. My wife and I were also there for 6 months. We wondered why we had 3 dead bolts on our door, that is until one day when 3 apartments in our hallway were broken into - not ours, I suppose because of the 3 locks! That's the other thing about the building - it's an endless maze of short hallways that have doors that are always closed shut. It's like it was designed by someone while they were high on LSD-25. Honestly, it would be a pretty good place if it were priced at less than 2/3rds the price. Back in 2000 we were paying $1250/mo. for a small one bedroom with a "fireplace" that consisted of a lightbulb inside of a spinning red and yellow gel with a blower heater unit. We had neighbors through thin walls in front, back, left, right, up and down. Okay, so I'm really down on the place, but here's the positives; a pool - I never used it but it looked clean, I think it might have been cold most of the time and you've got many stories of people's balconies staring right down at you. Also, there's some businesses right outside the door - most notably the newsstand which I actually do miss. Oh, and Baja Buds! If you like to eat at hamburger joints with lots of geriatrics, the Hamlet is a bonus. Honestly, I took my wife's intuition on this when I secured a job in Venice - for some reason she thought it was a great deal, but she's a saleseman's dream. I went along with it because I needed to find a place immediately, and it's located at the most convenient location to get around L.A., where the 405 meets the 101. Our next 5 years were at an apartment building in Venice which had it's own issues, but was leaps and bounds beyond Westwood Villas.
