We just moved in 2 weeks ago. We fell in love with the area (nice area and it's VERY close to work) and the price was right ($950/month for us - all other places around here are $1150 and up with no parking no pets, etc)
Anyway, like the Mr. 6/8/02 said, the manager is turning out to be a friendly neighborhood slumlord.
The halls have carpeting - but it's very cheap and in disrepair. The trash does get very unpleasant I noticed this weekend.
The painters that the mgr does business with (for 20 years now, he says) uses the cheapest crap paint that's not even interior grade paint. We are very concerned about mold damage, because the bathroom wall was completely water damaged. When they "fixed" the damage, the simply scraped some of the old paint off and painted over that portion of the wall. Bottom line is, the whole slab of wall - from the adjoining wall too the shower needs to be replaced.
Speaking of paint, EVERY door knob had paint on it. The knobs in the kitchen and bathroom were the .50 cent ones and THEY had paint on them. (We just replaced them and took the loss). For some reason, 2 of the 4 doors in the place didn't latch closed. We had to fix that too. Bathroom was a mess. Had to scrape off a bunch of sticker around the mirror. The only bathroom light at the sink part was a 40watt bulb in a dome fixture. It was too dark, so we replaced it with a 200 watt. We'll see how long that lasts. That area really needs light, but there only one fixture. We also had to put in the heat lamp for the bathroom. There was a burned out white bulb in that fixture - DOH! Our last apartment was in Eagle Rock. It was not as run-down as the one we got at Wilshire Embassy.

On top of all that, over the past few days, we have had very strange things happen in the night. Our cat is unreasonably freaked out at odd times - even though she seems to be getting used to the place. My wife has had nightmares of a guy cutting people up and putting the parts in the closet and in the walls. And strangest of all, one morning she told me that I tried to strangle her in the night. Yeah yeah - I know what you must be thinking - husband tries to strangle wife doesn't sound like haunting. But I actually love her and honestly don't feel hostility toward her at all. It totally weirded me out when she told me because I had no idea.

Lucky for us, it is only a 6 month lease. ;)
