I took an apartment in one the old newly renovated buildings about a year ago: I fell in love with the ocean view from the balcony and the high ceilings.
The so called renovation was just a very superficial one: the floors were uneven and felt like walking on thin plywood, and the carton-like walls occasionally revealed drill holes from the previous tenants.
Noise is unbearable in the morning on the units facing west: the breath taking sunsets could not offset the relentless beeping of trucks in the morning from the beach services, and when that stops the trash trucks starts their loud noise on the south sides for most of the morning; when I had to work from home I had to shut the windows to get anything work done.

At the end of the lease expect to be mercilessly shafted: you will forced down your throat a 40% increase in your rent, or even more if you stay on a month by month... so if you plan to stay for longer this is not a smart choice: since Marina del Rey has no rental control they can do pretty much what they want and go away with it.

One more thing: there is a lot of construction going around that area, and there is planned renovation on the apartment complex next block, so noise will get even worse, and so will the quality of the air: when we moved out last month I had black grease all over my balcony furniture, not what you expect from an ocean view apartment.

yah, same story, noisy, nasty Beaches and Harbors depot below, brutal increases in rent.
