I moved to Tierra Del Rey at the tail end of the dot com boom. I was surprised the rent was similar to what I'd been paying the Bay Area, but I did get real "luxury apartment" amenities in my one-bedroom unit, i.e. a roman tub and stacked washer and dryer. And the location is excellent - next to the shopping and theatre area of Marina Del Rey.
However, at the end of my six-month lease, I was invited to renew for a twelve-month period at a rent more than ten percent higher! Now, how many of us get a ten percent raise every six months' Especially during a recession' So I decided to pay the even higher month-to-month rate while looking for a home to buy. (I should thank the management - it turned out that was a pretty good time to buy).
Aside from the gouging, the management at Tierra Del Rey was courteous and professional, and the complex is attractive and well-kept. The eastern building is slightly removed from the main building and thus is a bit inconvenient for access to the office and fitness room (which is nothing special), and has a public walkway running along the back, but it does have it's own outdoor spa. Parking is slightly cramped (my neighbor's SUV was often encroaching on my space), and the garage often sprung leaks, I'm guessing from the spa.
Overall, Tierra Del Rey was a pleasant place to stay (I miss my nightly soak in the Roman tub), but the aggressive pricing turned me off.

I live in the West building, and have to listen to interminable stomping, loud TVs & music, and yelling from both my upstairs and downstairs neighbors. The noise, and discourteousness of the neighbors is truly amazing. Management is powerless to do anything about it, and I am screwed. Luckily, I am here on a short lease. If I had signed up for longer, I would definitely break my lease and move elsewhere, and let management try to sue me.
