Things might be looking up

My lease is set to expire the end of March. I've lived here since 2001 and have suffered under the inattentiveness, greed and mismanagement of previous owners. With that as background, when I wandered today into the office to find out what obscene rent increase I was to be granted with the obligatory smile, I was pleasantly surprised.

I did get the smile (from a wonderfully gracious and attractive Leasing Manager [Sanaz]), but before I could hand over a letter stating I would move out if the increase was exhorbidant, I was told there would be no rent increase this year. I was left speechless. Perhaps the new owners do believe in customer service.

Of course, the jury is still out. But since the new owners took over, my service requests have been acted on within 24 hours. A noisy neighbor was politely told not to blast his music at 4:00 a.m., and another neighbor who lets his dog poop on the carpet and never cleans it up, has evidently been told that's not a neighborly thing to do. He has stopped. (The dog has stopped as well. :-)

Elevators could be more efficient. Also, the elevator licenses have lapsed, but in fairness we were told it's being acted on, and the maintenance staff does a great job of cleaning the interiors of the building every Sunday.

With rents skyrocketing in the Marina, it's really pleasant to know that the new owners do value us as customers. Unfortunately, I signed a year lease, so I have no excuse to visit the lovely Sanaz for another year. :-(

Seriously: ask questions before moving in. The history of the building is far from stellar, but a change might be abrewing. It's definitely worth a look.

If you follow the damn news you will realise that housing prices will begin to drop due to the lending mess. So it would be imprudent to say that "things are looking up" for this establishment due to owners being "nice" to us. The owners would be foolish to raise rent now. You should have negotiated or waited a tad bit more before signing that 1 year. Im sure you are mangement's favorite tenant now.
