They Put on a Good Front

I saw their sign "$99 MOVES YOU IN" as I driving down the road and checked it out. One month rent, cable and refrigerator free with a $99 deposit. They had two clean looking pools, a mini fitness center and nice grounds. The apartment they showed me was furnished and looked good. Not too spacious but I wasn't picky. So I signed a year lease which was the only way I could get the one month free rent, and that was the only reason I was there in the first place. So I got my keys and checked out my new place. Thus the problems begin.

1. My apartment, unlike the one I was shown, had a mini mini dishwasher and a mini mini microwave.

2. The kitchen cupboards are up so high you can't use the top shelf without a chair. That leaves you one shelf that's still pretty up there. I'm 5'9 and had trouble with the first shelf.

3. The shelves are short and scarce. You've got only one cupboard for food and you can't even stand your cereal boxes or taller bottles up. And of course, you can't reach the top shelf. So the top of the fridge has oil and other unappealing items up there.

4. Late the first night, the toilet over flowed, and I mean flowed. I didn't realize what was happening for a couple minutes and when I went in the bathroom there was a few inches of standing water. 50 towels later it was cleaned up only to overflow several more times before the office opened the next day. They came later the next day, said it was fixed and left. It did it again, they "fixed" it again, it happen again, they put in a new toilet. It happen again, they "fixed" it, it happen again, and than they finally after a week and a half of constantly cleaning up toilet water, fixed whatever was wrong.

5. They towed my car the first night because I have tinted windows and they couldn't see the little tag they gave me. I didn't have to pay for the tow but I did miss a day of work trying to find someone to drive me to the tow shop which turned out to be 20 miles away in the opposite direction of my work.

6. The shower head busted a couple days later and we had to buy a new one.

7. The bathroom sink takes about an hour for any hot water to come out of it.

8. The bathroom drawer falls off its track EVERY time you open it.

9. The place is packed with spiders. Big, hairy, black spiders.

10. And yesterday I found MICE in my kitchen. I don't even know what to do.

11. My assigned parking spot is down a few flights of stairs and around the corner.

12. We're directly above the street and we soon found that the local fire department is half a block away. Sometimes it's so loud it hurts.

13. There's also a 5 story parking garage across the street and we constantly get to listen to all sorts of different car alarms.

14. The female office staff is rude and fake. (The only male who works in there is great)

15. I'm sure there's more but I'm starting to get depressed. I still have 9 more months of this.
I tried to break my lease but it'll cost 3 months rent which is over $3,000. If I could save that kind of money I wouldn't be in this dump in the first place.

I warn all of you. Nearly all my surrounding neighbors and everyone I've met around the complex has similar stories, some so so so much worse than mine.

Never sign a lease until you know what you're getting into.

Oh, something positive. The maintenance staff is great. They really do try their best with what they're given. They're a very nice bunch of guys.
