Not Worth the Ridiculous Rent

Where to start with this apt. complex. First, know that I moved from San Diego. I lived in the *hood* and for as long as I had lived there, I *never* had the problems for half the rent that I have at VDL. Rent is over $1100.00/mo. for a 1 BR, 694SF apt.

I moved into bldg 17 in March 2005. The first night I spent there I didn't have hot water. It took the off hours weekend crew apx 3 hrs to "fix" the situation. I'm not sure exactly what was fixed because the water would run hot for a few minutes then it would become lukewarm again.

I had to complain several more times and eventually did get hot water but I'm still not happy about it because the hot water is limited. Funny, I pay a water and gas bill and I still can't use as much hot water as I want because the hot water stops after a certain amount. BTW, this is not about me having used all the water in the hot water heater, either. It's because the hot water heater needs to be replaced and VDL won't do it. They hem and haw and blame the problem on everything else.

Secondly - the bug situation is incomprehensible. I don't know about the other bldgs on the property but the one I live in has been infested with roaches at least three times. I am constantly on the phone with the leasing ofc to have the exterminators come into my apartment to spray for roaches. And it's not *just* roaches. Pinchers. Flies. Beetles. In short, if there is an insect pest then they all eventually end up infesting this bldge.

Thirdly - the electricity meters are apparently located in the open and easily accessible by malicious teens who frequently switch off the electricity. It takes VDL hours to get off their asses (because it usually happens after they've closed) before the person on call will go out and switch the electricity back on. If you live here, make sure you don't mind electricity outages caused by teens looking for shits & giggles.

Fourth - I suppose there *must* be a resident mgr living on the property although I've never seen the person and there is no way to contact him. When there is a problem after hours you get the after hours canned msg on the voicemail and have to leave a msg. Eventually (hours later) someone might call you back but if you don't sound annoyed when you leave your msg, they won't call you back until the next business day.

The lesson is that if you're going to live here then you better know the law and either be or work for an atty because the threat of a lawsuit is the only language the leasing office understands. If you work in the legal industry, they will bend over backwards to be nice to you because they know they can't steamroll over you like they most likely do to the other tenants on this property. The only reason they are nice to me is because they know I would not hesitate to litigate their asses into oblivion for the various health ordinance infractions.

If you can find better elsewhere in this area, then take it. Don't bother with VDL unless you are desperate for housing.
