I have lived at this apartment for 3 years and am now looking to move out.

The new Management Promotheus has recently redesigned their leasing office. This is as far as their interest goes.

Here's the level of customer experience:
- When the sole elevator in the unit breaks down, it is not repaired for months on end. If you are moving in, conducting groceries, you have to use the dinghy stair case to climb all 3 floors.

- The parking garages are extremely unsafe, poorly lit and storages are broken into every week.

- The laundry card machine was broken into from within the leasing office months ago. It has not been repaired. Residents have to personally ask onsite officers to charge their card (cash only!!) from only 9am-6pm.

- Recently, the apartment management has begun a roof repair project to seal asbestos in the cieling. With only a 2 week notice, they are asking residents to relocate to "guest suites". Residents have to continue paying rent, pay for the move out of their own pocket and be prepared to lose their personal furnishings and belongings in case their original apartments get contanimated. Prometheus is offering no reimbursement or support of any kind to the tenants. On top of this, they are asking residents on short notice to move out in 2 days, irrespective of their personal condition (work, vacation, health).

The above reasons demonstrate American Apartments do not care for new or current tenants.

Here is the reason why I had stayed so far. Its only 15 minutes driving distance from work.

Please make sure you talk to enough people before moving in this scary apartment complex.

Mi Dio! It is even worse at the Americana than I thought. To move residents out of their homes at their own expense and on such short notice is not only extremely selfish and rude, but also potentially dangerous. This sort of triple stress - physical, emotional and mental - can endanger health to a point that has been proven to lead to many problems such as cancer, ulcers, stress diabetes, cardiac for a few. I suggest that you organize with other residents who are being subjected to this incredible experience (all residents on the third floor of buildings scheduled to be re-roofed and who feel as you do) to wage a war of protest against how much you are being expected to bear. Prometheus, for some strange reason I can't understand, seems to have been in business for over 30 years and controls many apartment complexes in northern California. Apartment owners may not understand what is really going on unless you tell them. Organize other residents who live in apartments that are scheduled for re-roofing. I would suggest at the very least to do a petition and send a group of concerned residents to the offices of The Tan Group on Charleston in Mountain View to personally deliver it to the owners in hopes that they will be sympathetic to and agree to force Prometheus to change their action plan for re-roofing to something that residents can safely live with. Also send a notarized copy of your petition via registered mail to prove receipt of it by The Tan Group. You will need to have a name to use for the addressee. If this doesn't work, may I suggest a class action suit against Prometheus? There are many experienced attorneys in the area who could give advice regarding class action suits. Please take care of yourselves health-wise throughout this miserable time so that you can guard your health despite the wrongdoings of Prometheus -- eat properly, exercise daily, sleep enough, and socialize with your family and friends as much as possible during this time. Guard your health and ensure your better future. The chances of becoming ill during this experience are very real. You must be aware and take care of yourselves especially now! Furniture can be replaced, but YOU are special and irreplaceable. I will pray for your safety and success!

Here's a link to the Mountain View Voice story: http://www.mv-voice.com/news/show_story.php?id=1676 Thank you so much for your detailed response to this post. I tremendously appreciate the level of detail you have provided. I had never thought I would need to mobilize my neighbors to demand decent terms for my current home. Only begining to realize how important it is for renters to have a working neighborhood committee to address issues such as this project. Typically, we can continue to live in an apartment for a while without even meeting neighbors until a tragedy such as this one comes along and you find yourself stranded. There are 50 families currently affected by this rooftop repair project. About half of us are meeting today to organize in writing demands for Prometheus. We intend to share the same letter by fax and in person to the Tan Group. I have reached out to the local distinguished community newspaper and others have reached out to the Mountain View Mediator for help. I will update this post if anything comes out of our activities. Thanks again for your interest and reminding me we need to be aware of our health concerns. Its our home, its everything to us in these troubled times :-(

What they're doing is illegal. They need to reimburse you for moving expenses related to the repairs and any belongings that can't be recovered. They're supposed to take it off your rent. If I were you, at that committee meeting, I'd ask everyone to not pay their rent to the company but to apply to the civil court to have all of your rents held in escrow (as an earnest statement that you're all willing to pay it) with the court, until a fair solution is found for your losses in civil court.
