Don't bother

Years at this apartment: 2002 - 2007
I lived at this complex for 5 years. The main reason I stayed was the location. This apartment complex is located just at the border of Palo Alto and Los Altos. It is walking distance to many stores, including the San Antonio Shopping Center. Great advantage, particularly during the winter holiday season, so you don't have to worry about parking when doing your annual shopping. However, the apartment itself is beyond frustrating. First, since the complex is located at such a good location, the manager does not take care of the building. He doesn't have to; there is always someone ready to move in. Once they move in, many tenants people leave after their one year lease has expired due to disgust. First of all, the hot water does not work sometimes, and the plumbing is so loud that when my next door neighbor took a shower, he sounded like he was in the same room with me. Second, the manager turns off the water - without warning - often, whenever apartments are being worked on, which averages a minimum of three times a month. I lived on the top floor. When the water finally came back on, extremely heavy force came out of my faucets, my shower and my toilet whenever the water was turned back on. It was startling and my toilet broke twice from the heavy force. Then I had to "chase" maintenance to fix the toilet, who claimed it was "not an emergency." I had an electricity outage in my apartment due to a burnt wire, but again it was "not an emergency." I had a mouse in my apartment. Again it was "not an emergency." I don't know, maybe I just expect too much. With the overprice of rents in the Bay Area, I would at least like to have hot water, not have rodents living in the complex, and have maintenance comply, without "chasing" them every time. In addition, the manager advertises that small children can attend the schools in the Los Altos District, by living in my complex without having to pay the high Los Altos rents (although our rent wasn't much less anyway). Therefore, the complex has many children. Therefore there are many small children screaming and yelling, and running up and down the stairs without supervision. The onsite property manager is a very sweet woman, but she is only allowed to show apartments, so whenever there are concerns she directs you to "speak to the main office." So, you have to call the off-site office with concerns and sometimes they are helpful, but sometimes not. So, it's Russian Roulette. Plus, if you go month-to-month on your lease, they insist that you give 60 days notice before you move. This difficult, because when I was looking for another apartment, when I found something "too early" I couldn't grab it, or I would have many weeks of double rent. Therefore, I had stress in having to try and get something closer to the end of the 60-day notice. There is absolutely no reason why they need 60 days notice, when most complexes find that a 30 day written notice is sufficient. I would say, "Don't bother" and look for somewhere else to move.
