I actually haven't "lived" at the Essex for an extended amount of time. However, I have visited one of my relatives twice for about 5-7 days each time. My relative had problems with the unit, but nothing different than any other rental property. The big difference was the lack of attentiveness in the management staff. I am not sure who Laurel is, but there is/was a white female w/ dark hair whose office was right in the front--she has a significant attitude problem. For the $$ one pays to merely rent, I would expect a lot more than what is provided. It is unfortunate that one has to exert so much energy to get the basicsw taken care of. Moreover, the call girls mentioned in other posts are very prevalent. If you are one that doesn't like that kind of environment, you should strongly consider not moving here. Some people choose different professions! I feel the apartments are nicely designed. This is not a top pick property due to the management, but the view and floorplans are nice. Also, be aware of some of management's known defects the units possess before you buy! Also, there is no central air and the windows don't open wide and don't have screens.
