Island Club

I lived in this complex for about 5 years. The grounds were maintained somewhat - they seemed to cut teh grass each week and trimmed the shrubbery on a regular basis.
However, there are three pools/jacuzzis throughout the complex. Only one is heated year-round. It is hit or miss if the the jacuzzi even works, and when it does it is so filthy why bother' There used to be two fitness rooms, but at one point they decided to convert one of them to the "resident relations" office. Later they decided it wasn't as convenient so the "resident relations" moved back into the main office, but they never changed it back into a fitness room. It just sits there, empty. The equipment in the main fitness room is like the jacuzzi tubs - always seems to be at least one or more broken. Or - the tradmill works but it is stuck at maximum incline.
There was information circulated at one point regarding mold in the apartments.
They REFUSE to replace the carpet, and tried to charge me to have it cleaned after I moved out, even though I had been there for 5 years, the carpet was not new when I moved in, AND they use carpet with a 5 year life. After I moved, I found out that they DID in fact replace the carpet in my unit. I knew they would - so I was able to avoid the charge they were trying to get me to pay in order to have it cleaned.
Maintenance will respond to service requests... again it is hit or miss if they actually fix the problem. I complained for over two years about a strong, rotten-fish smell that permeated the back of the unit every time I ran the air conditioner. I finally had to take time out to BE HOME to make sure they investigated and fixed the problem. Turns out it was a component that had fried in the power box - nice fire hazard (in my child's room).
The walls are quite thin, allowing for excessive noise - particularly from the upstairs units into the downstairs.
Some of the last straws - they wanted to charge me an additional "washer dryer fee" each month for the privelege of having a tiny, 10-year old stackable washer/dryer unit in my apartment, as well as the installation of a "Pet Station" directly in front of my patio, so that all the dog-owning tenants could were invited to have their pets use the grass in front of my unit (which prior to the pet station was a plus about my unit) and then deposit the waste (if they bothered to pick it up) into the pet station. Kind of eliminated my desire to barbecue on the patio anymore, what with the bugs, and the smell all thanks to the new convenience for the dogs.
Rent increases of $60 or more to be counted on, from lease to lease, regardless that the apartment declines in condition over the years, and despite my requests for repainting and new carpeting.
The management is the typical uppity dimwit leasing agent - only cares about getting new leases signed. Plays dumb when calling to inquire about maintenance, and that's if they are not completely unresponsive.
All in all a completely horrible community to live in. I didn't even touch on the residents, which have grown to be increasingly vile and seedy. There is no standard to who they allow to move in, as long as they get a lease signed for their monthly quota. It's atrocious.
Parking can be a problem - although I only have one and could easily park it in my assigned spot - halfway across the complex. The distance from my assigned spot to my unit was ridiculous, although it made carrying in groceries a complete joy (note sarcasm).
