Good overall: long review

Years at this apartment: 2003 - 2003
I'm a Stanford student, and will be leaving this September. I have lived here since 1999 with my wife in a 1 bedroom 800 sq. ft. apartment, 2nd floor.
Things were not perfect when we moved in, but it was clean. Over the years, the maintenance had varying response times from 1 day to 1 week, but on a few occasions requests for service would be forgotten about. But I suspect that some of this is due to past employees who were not as good as those who are currently employed.
One issue that never went away (and we learned to accept it) was that our gas heater never worked well. It would work for a few weeks, then stop working. Then I would rap it a few times, and it would start working again. This cycle would repeat for several times before it stopped working completely. We would get managment to address it, and the novice guy would think it was merely the pilot light, but that was clearly not the case. Eventually they thought it was the thermostat, and replaced it. It worked again for 2 weeks and died just like before. We gave up and stopped reporting it broken, as it was clear they were not going to replace it (it was after the dot.com burst).
Good parts now (most important): Apartments are spacious. Very quiet and attractive exterior environment. Kind, caring, and dedicated staff (except the weekend woman). Parking is ample (but a little crazy sometimes due to mismanagement in assigned parking spaces before). Pools are refreshing now in the summer time (they used to be heated in the summer). They will go month-to-month with you after your 1-year lease expires (if you want). Right next to a small grocery store. Car-washing space behind the complex. Tenants are friendly, and come from a variety of diverse backgrounds.
Bad parts now: weekend woman, pools are not heated in winter time (this really sucks), complex is between a bad and good community, some apartments are close to the road and train (noise), and packages sent to you and delivered to the office may not reach your hands for several months (they don't tell you when they receive packages, you must know that there is one coming so you can pick it up when you expect it has arrived).
Overall, I currently rate this complex a 4/5. Hope this helps.
