Look but Don't Touch

Discovered Esplanade at Riverwalk by accident actually. Was searching for apartments in the area and came across it- a beautiful place, well the building and apartments, and a nice location off of the freeway. Well...
The place is way overpriced. Yes, it has nice amenities and fixtures and yes its nearly new or new phases are still opening as of now but WOW you will pay lots of money to live here. But thats not a problem because since they are charging so much they will treat you fairly and value you as a tenant. Wrong!
The manager and the leasing employees are quite possibly the rudest, nastiest, liars I have yet to come across- not only in my search for a new home, but all in all, at any business- which is what this is, a business.
We first met with a nice man who told us he was a temp- which explains why he was nice and not like the permanent employees. Because of the apartment quality, location and his friendliness we agreed to rent. We chose the apartment, left a deposit and would return the following day to sign the lease.
When we arrived the next day- he was gone! His temping career started and ended the same day, I guess and in his place was a snotty, *itch that did nothing but bad-mouth the temporary leasing agent- referring to him as "her" if get my drift, and said he was incompetant. While we sat there and listened to this smearing campaign, we overheard incoming telephone calls that were prospective tenants asking for "him" specifically- there must have been 6 or 7.
As we moved towards signing the lease, this nasty manager informed us that the apartment we agreed to rent and agreed to pay was no longer available. Without explanation, other to say "things change quickly" she tried to railroad us into an apartment that was $150 per month more than the one we agreed to rent- only the previous day.
We even had a written, but not binding, agreement stating the price, the unit number etc. and she completely ignored it. Needless to say we declined her offer to rip us off and moved on.
Based on the others we know that live there, and a couple of reviews here, the place is a rip off and the staff continue to be sour, miserable women.
My advice, don't take a chance and enter into a lease and volunteer to be mistreated and pay a huge sum. Okay, so you might have to drive a few extra miles but seriously, this wasn't a personality conflict between the leasing staff and us, its a culture at this place- a culture that no one must tolerate.
