sterling may look nice and everything, but it is not worth the ridiculous rent price. to start, there are so many problems with the building itself, such as the locks on the doors jam all the time, ceiling fans do not always work, kitchen boards fall off easily, and other such things. another problem are the VERY thin walls. you can hear everything that goes on inside a room from the room next door and living room, and vice versa. also you can hear the footsteps and noises from the floors above, although this is a problem in many apartments. the "furnishing" they give you is all crap. they give you a desk chair that can rock, which ends up damaging the wall if it is placed close to the wall (most desks are placed next to a wall), the mattresses are crap and the washer and dryer always have problems. the internet in sterling is just a tiny bit faster than a 56k dial-up modem and the "upgraded" internet is not any faster. they also only give you one internet outlet, so if you share a room, you have to get a router. the only nice thing about parking is that you can get an assigned spot. other than that, the parking is horrible. you can get towed for almost any reason, even if you are parking in your own spot. my roommate had his car towed from his spot because someone else thought it was their spot and asked sterling management to tow his car. plenty of people have had their cars towed from the oversized retail parking area. there is very little guest parking and there are non-stop car alarm sounds coming from the parking structure. the gate arm thing that is supposed to only allow resident cars into the structure is always broken which makes it completely useless. the printer in the computer lab never works and seems to have disappeared since the last time i tried to print. picking up packages is somewhat trouble some, as you have to bring the slip they give you when you get a package and make it down the office before they close, although this is probably the same at most apartments. driving through the complex is a hassle since there are many blind turns and many people speed through them. the staff that works at the sterling office can never answer any of your questions and always say that they have to ask their managers, even for simple questions like 'how much is rent.' the maintenance workers are just other students that do a poor job of being careful to not damage the apartment while "fixing" your maintenance problems. although they had a special promotion for a 42" plasma tv, me and my roommates somehow signed up during the month they decided not to offer it, so we did not receive one. the garbage disposal area needs to be cleaned more often, because there is so much garbage that it piles up and doesn't fit in the disposal anymore. most of it just lies in the street building up an awful stench and stains the ground with the smell and some sort of sticky garbage juice. some nice things about sterling is that it is close to campus (walking distance), utilities included in rent, close to lots of food, and has its own work out center kind of thing.
overall, i would say avoid living at sterling if possible. i am surprised that there aren't as many ratings for sterling here on this site, since i know so many people that complain about sterling all day long. although there is no deposit fee for signing up, they make it so you cannot cancel your lease contract, so you are stuck paying for the apartment for the rest of the lease even though you do not wish to live there anymore. DO NOT LIVE AT STERLING UNIVERSITY PALMS HOUSING.
