Could be a lot better for the idea

I moved to Sacramento 3 years ago from Wisconsin and stumbled upon this historic hotel in Old Sacramento that was converted into an apartment building. Wow! I thought, this is really cool and it has a very unique look, what a great place! On my move-in day, the apartment manager didn't show up, leaving my dad and I stranded outside with all of our luggage in the 100 degree temperatures. Luckily, one of the residents let us in and we waited in the hall for another couple of hours before the manager showed up. A horrible experience to say the least. The construction of this place is old and not well maintained. You will get drafts in your windows (a killer on your SMUD bills), there are no screen doors on the sliding patio doors, and the light fixtures offer a bright yellow light that hurts the eyes (I recommend floor lamps). Don't get me wrong, I decorated my apartment up so that the charm of the place and the atmosphere of the courtyard fountain made it a comfortable home that I was happy with. The frustration I have had with the management and the general circus of Old Sac tourism have been more than enough to make me happy to leave though. Don't expect a parking space unless you want to dish out at least $115 a month for a garage spot. Even if you have a parking spot, expect you or your visitors to get at least 5-10 parking tickets a year unless you're ---- about feeing the meters. I was lucky enough to work right downtown so I survived without a car for awhile. The rent is about what it should be for the location and uniqueness of the apartments but the money really needs to be focused more on the tenants that live there. To sum it up, I really liked the personality of my apartment at the Clarendon House but the tourist trap of Old Sac is not a great place to make a permanent home and lacks all practicality of living a normal life.

This review is old. Having known someone who just moved in recently the management is wonderful. Lonny the building manger couldn't have been nicer or more helpful. Monthly parking in Sacramento is expensive no matter where you live. And living in Old Sacramento you have to expect that there will be tourists. Also living in an old building you have to expect that there will be drafts in the windows. If you want an energy efficient apartment with no street traffic then move to any modern boring complex.
