You probably do not want to live here

Years at this apartment:

Some good friends of mine were getting married in January of 2004 and found these apartments to live in. The main reason they chose River Pointe was the cost: they got a low income, one bedroom and I think their rent was around $650 a month. They lived on the inside of the complex near the back pool. Everything seemed alright except that their apartment had a strong odor of pet urine in one corner, which they hadn't noticed initially when they moved in. About a month and a half later, one of their cars was broken into and a few things were stolen. The small side window in the back of her car had been broken to get into her car. The police don't care, after all, it IS Sacramento. Then in June 2004, my girlfriend and one of her friends moved to River Pointe. They got a two bedroom on the edge of the complex facing River Plaza Drive. The apartment itself wasn't bad; they had a few minor problems like you would expect with any apartment complex. But security definately was another story. A month or so after she moved in, my car was broken into right outside the apartment and several expensive items were stolen. Also, the neighbor next door had his car broken into a few weeks later and then it was broken into again the following week! Between the two of us, we had three robberies in a month. Then just last week, as my girlfriend was moving her stuff out of her apartment at 1:30 in the afternoon, she came out with boxes in hand and there was a person in her car rummaging through her stuff. She yelled and him and he took off in his car having stolen her purse. All of these events were reported to police and to the apartments. The police don't really care unless you know who the person was and the apartment staff were sympathetic but the only thing they could say is that they have a security guard. For the year and a half we lived here, we saw a police car in the area once. We saw the security guard twice and both of those times were when we were in the spa a little after hours. If that doesn't concern you about security, maybe the frequent midnight police helicopters overflying the apartments with their spotlights on and on their loudspeakers saying "stay inside your homes," will concern you. This occurred regularly, probably 3 or 4 times a month. One other annoyance was the referral fee. River Pointe has signs everywhere saying "$200 Referral Fee" and "Think Referral". But actually getting that referral fee is a whole other story. My friends went in to get the referral when my girlfriend moved in and they seriously had to go to the office around 15 times to continually ask if they were going to get it and when they were going to get it, not to mention countless inquiring phone calls. River Pointe was very apprehensive to give any money away. Also, where we were, parking was ok. You only get one covered spot but there was usually other places to park. So in summary, the actual apartments are not too bad. You will get a reasonable apartment for a pretty good price. They aren't too noisey, unless you live on the edge by River Plaza Drive, in which case you have to listen to all the cool people go 50-60 mph down the road that has a 30 mph speed limit. But security is definately an issue. There are some shady people living there and after all the break-ins and robberies and police helicopters, I just didn't feel safe at all. I know Sacramento is pretty bad for crime, but if you can at all afford a nicer apartment complex (preferably a gated one), I would definately recommend staying away from River Pointe. If you do choose to live at River Pointe, definately get an apartment inside the complex, not near any of the roads or the pools, and make sure it is well lit. I would recommend checking these places out at night and see how different they feel at night. Also, whatever you do, don't leave ANYTHING in your car at night. Not even if you have an alarm. And keep a baseball bat under your bed, just in case.
