Sad but true

My husband and I have lived here for several years. When we first moved in, we were delighted with the mature trees everywhere, and the HUGE kitchen that is almost unheard of in apartments. There are ALWAYS pitfalls in renting, so most things we took in stride. However, there are some SADLY NEGLECTED ISSUES on this property:

1. The main gate - In a "gated community", WHY is the gate NOT operational a majority of the time' I feel like I am being cheated out of some of my rent money, because I PAY for having that gate closed at night. Perhaps the property management company is unaware of how unsafe this makes residents in the community feel.

2. UNSUPERVISED CHILDREN - If you are a parent, needing a place to stay, and feel safe with your children, I am sorry to say that this is NOT the place. There are HORRIBLE children running around, unsupervised, day and night. The children swear at adults, play in the dumpsters, throw items in the pool, pee in the pools and spa (FYI, children under age 14 are NOT allowed in the spa, per the complex rules, but management does not enforce this).

3. SAFETY - The footgates are all broken. Anyone can walk in. Bars are torn out of the fence, people wander in off the streets at any given time of day. There have been break ins, I was threatened by a tenant, and it took me screaming at the front office staff to get the problem resolved. As a parent, safety is a huge issue.

4. MOLD - I don't believe the apartment complex when they say that the mold in our units is our responsibility, and that there is nothing wrong. Has anyone ever seen a bleach AND mold killer resistant mold that comes back every week' Or window sills that crack and peel under the pressures of the mold'

All in all, I am baffled. When we first moved here, this was a bit of a peaceful oasis in a big metropolitan community. The staff were friendly, and we felt respected as tenants. Now' We don't matter. We aren't valued. We sure as heck are not safe. I have my doors locked, windows locked, and neighbors guarding each others houses when we're gone for more than a standard work day. We planned on staying here until we bought a house, but rest assured, we're moving as soon as we can. Women being sexually assaulted, people breaking in to peoples' homes, children vandalizing property (oh yeah, forgot to mention my car has been keyed 4 times) all add up to me feeling unsafe. Plain and simple. This place is a hazard to your health

I bet you were my neighbor across the way. I know exactly what you are talking about. Unfortunately, River Terrace is now a part of the low-rent district of Natomas. With the economic downturn, lack of management oversight, and lack of adequate security, things are only bound to get worse. I heard it from one of the maintenance people before I left last year; "in the last six months, things have just gone down hill severely here. So much vandalism..."
