Poor management and maintance...unwilling to help

Years at this apartment: 2004 - 2006

I lived there for over two years. Our first apartment was great. The only problem two neighbors. She had four kids who fought, ran around unsupervised, and her teenage son physically abused his little brothers and sister. He even climbed up to the balcony of the second floor to get into the house after an hour of screaming, throwing rocks at the sliding glass door and pounding on the front door at 2 am didn't work. We complained and they told us that multiple neighbor complained and they would talk to them. Nothing changed.

The second neighbor smoked pot. I don't really care but when the smoke floats into my home, I do. I couldn't open my doors or windows at night or my apartment would fill with smoke. When we had something fixed in our apartment they blamed us, even though we had complained that it was our neighbor.

Being a college students, we (my boyfriend and I) searched for roommates to rent one room in our 3 bedroom. Two well qualified people were turned down with no explanation. How can four incomes not qualify but our two did' One was on financial aid and was therefore denied. He was married and made $40,000 a year.

When our lease on our three bedroom came up for renewal we took on a one bedroom.
They had someone for our old place and moved us into the one bedroom long before it was raedy. The old tennant had left behind a washer and dryer. We told management and they never came to pick them up. When we did our walk through the washer and dryer were gone and we were charged for a cracked pan. Upon moving in we complained from the beginning about the dirty, stinky carpet. We were told to stay a week and see if it just might air out. After the week, we asked them to come in and see the dirt and smell the smoke. They agreed the carpet was not "new" but fine. All it needed was to be cleaned. I was also at this point chastised by Roxanne for living out of boxes. If I was going to have to change apartments I was not going to upack just to repack to move. When the cleaning was not enough and walking around in my socks on my carpet made them look as if I had walked outside, I said I had enough. We were told they would replace the carpet if we signed a longer lease. So I called the management compnay. That was when life became difficult.

Our packages were being sent back to the sender, we were being watched a received notices on our door about noise complaints and late rent notices taped to the door for all to see and getting things fixed was nearly impossible. We were NEVER late on our rent. Our showerhead didn't work and we had to take baths for 3 weeks. The tub spout had no caulking and water was going into the wall. They didn't seem phased by this. So I helped process by dumping water in the hole. They refused to fix our garbage disposal saying it was not an emergency and they didn't feel comfortable going into the apartment to fix it without us there b/c we had gone to their management company. We would have to meet them there during business hours. Hello!! We work. We eventually fixed it ourselves.

Upon move out we were charged for pet rent for the past six months although we have always had pets, we were told the pet policy had changed. They had us resign the pet policy and the policy said nothing of pet rent. We were charged for a broken drawer and cleaning b/c the carpet needed to be replaced. They said b/c of pet stains and dirtiness. All the broken things were listed on our move-in checklist, but it was mysteriously missing so we were charged. We were given the option to renew but the rent was raised by $125 a month and they actually verbally asked that we not renew b/c of our unhappiness. We were told that they felt that they had tried and couldn't make us happy b/c we could never be pleased living there. The truth was the heat they got from their bosses was too much. We went to the management company and got a refund for all the overcharges upon move-out for the pet rent, broken drawer, cracked washer dryer pan and even the ridicuous cleaning bill.
