Good place to live if you are new to town...

I moved to this building last year from Seattle, after living there for about fifteen years. By and large this is a good place to live - the occupancy tends to swing more toward retirees, so if you are a younger professional who wants a lot of quiet, this is a good place to start. The noise is a moderate problem, particularly with fire engines and the occasional freight train that rolls through at 2 in the morning; if possible, try to get a unit that is on the interior of the building, this will muffle noise. Otherwise, I'd say that most nights it's pretty quiet for downtown living. Having a predominantly older crowd living there helps.
The building's management recently changed hands, and there are some growing pains with that - prior to that this building had an onsite manager that had lived here for ten years and was excellent. That person is gone, unfortunately. The new manager is clearly uninformed about the area, but generally nice. Maintenance crew is still the same, and I have had a couple of minor issues repaired on the same day before I returned home from work. Building has a nice interior courtyard and indoor pool that are maintained constantly. Parking is secure, but if you have an SUV you will find the tight spaces a challenge. 8-10 laundry units on each floor all of which are clean and available 24 hours, and run on a credit card system that makes the issue of scrounging for quarters a non-issue. All of the fixtures were either well above average or brand new.
I signed two successive six-month leases, the first at $1400 for six months, which included $60/mo for parking. They did not raise my rent for the second six-month lease, and when I opted not to sign a third lease, the building management raised my rent by a mere $10 on a month-to-month arrangement. All in all, pretty fair, and having shopped around this appears to be slightly below the market average for this neighborhood.
Overall, it's been an above average experience, with easy access to the theatres, the Gaslamp, the trolley stations and Petco, without being barraged with the abundant noise that any of those places create. I don't know if I'd live here again, but considering I signed a lease blind for this 1 BDR, I consider myself pretty lucky. Definitely a very solid "Plan B" apartment complex for those shopping around for a place in downtown.
