Not as nice as it looks. Not a horrible place, just a horrible value

When I first moved to Archstone Mission Valley I thought it was a good value for the location, aesthetics and seclusion. The rent was reasonable and the grounds were quiet. Now the rent is ridiculous. This place has quickly gone down hill. Probably my biggest complaint would be the gates. First of all they are a false sense of security. They take about 10 minutes to close and you can stop them from closing easily. They have been broken either physically or the programatically about 20 times literally in the past 3 years. One time for 9 days straight. You couldn't even get in the front gate with your keyfob, you had to hope your wife was home, call her on the call box and have her buzz you in. The customer service people here change like I change my underwear and they are not very bright. The parking lot lights when burnt out takes them weeks to fix. Not very reassuring considering there were a few rapes just one apartment complex over in a dark parking lot. The management just doesn't have common sense here. They don't write things down properly, give you the wrong information or just don't have simple answers for you. For example, they finally put sanitizer cloths in the gym but no garbage to throw them out. Currently a lot of shady characters have moved in and it seems all their friends get to enjoy the pool and facilities. The new marketing strategy on the Archstone corporate site makes me laugh, talking about energy efficient. Well that must apply to every complex but the Mission Valley one. The windows are so thin, 20 minutes after you turn off the A/C the temp rises about 10 degrees, vice versa with heat. The landscaping is nice, but don't let it fool you.

I also had the same experience with the pool. For a good few weeks it was like spring break every night. There were at least 50 beer drinking kids, there's NO WAY that management could not be aware. One night I counted 15 people in the hot tub alone. It was ONLY because I called security EVERY night that it stopped. Common sense would have been to station a guard there and wait for them to show up but it was CLEAR that management didn't care when I reported the problem. The other issue I had was that I had signed a 3 month lease. At the end of that lease they wanted to raise my rent about $300 to sign up for another 3 months (from 1,500 to 1,800). I still don't understand how rent could go up $300 in 3 short months on a ONE bedroom apartment.
