You can hear arguments, laughing, smell smoke and you better hope that your upstairs neighbor doesn't weigh more than 10 lbs beause you'll hear that too. For as much as these apts cost you would think that they would have been built a little better

I haven't really had any problems - I only hear my neighbors when they are REALLY loud (vacuuming, hammering, etc). In general, the noise is not a problem (and I work nights, so I sleep during the day - so if noise was a problem, I'd be moving).

I have been here almost a year and I think that this is as good as it gets in terms of noise control in San Diego apts. I have never heard laughing, etc. that comes from inside the unit. The problem here happens when the offender is out on the balcony or leaves the door to the patio/balcony open so that the noise travels that way. An upstairs neighbor has to really work hard at causing floor/ceiling noise, but mine has mastered it. I have yet to hear vacuuming, etc., but when he's spiteful he'll drop what sounds like concrete or boxes of books on the floor. The office is sometimes responsive to complaints, sometimes not. (Try hearing "Dust on the Wind" full-blast for the 1000th time when you have a migraine.) I've spoken with neighbors who have said that they know they're ignored when they call about something, that they're told the mgr is out when she's not, and I've had the same experience, but, on average, most of the time an attempt is made to correct things. My upstairs neighbor is unusual as far as noise--people will look up from the grounds below and ask me where the loud noise is coming from and I get to say that that's my upstairs neighbor. I haven't heard this elsewhere in the complex and I walk my dog around quite a bit. I do know that people who don't control dog barking are evicted, so if you hear that it's because no one has complained. Overall, I think most of the residents really try to respect each other's needs here on the noise thing. Don't get me started on dog poop, however....
