BRE Management will totally screw you...

There was a fire in our building, our apartment was uninhabitable, and they tried to make us live in it with a hole in the roof where the firemen cut through. They finally relented, and gave us a new apartment (they wouldn't let us out of our lease, even though legally, the Red Cross said our apartment was uninhabitable), which should have nullified our lease. They gave us a smaller apartment which they charged us more for.
Our garbage disposal didn't work. The sink would back up and overflow and flood our kitchen. It took months to get them to relent to fix it. When they did, we looked up the disposal at Home Depot. It was $35.
Recently a maintenance guy left his golf cart unattended (the kind with a heavy steel toolbox on the back), and it rolled down a hill into my husband's car causing thousands of dollars worth of damage. BRE is fighting my insurance company, claiming they aren't responsible.
When it's time to renew your lease, they give you a letter, and tell you that you have to sign it about 2 months before you lease is up to get a good rate. Otherwise the rent goes up like $150/month, making it nearly impossible to find a new place.
The parking is also a nightmare. Don't stay out late in your second car, you will never get a space.
Whatever you do. Do not rent from BRE properties. They are the biggest money grubbing bastards you'll ever do business with.
