I moved into Hotel California in 1999 and recently moved out Nov 30, 2008.
You would think after living there so long that I would have something nice to say but I don t.
Future tenants are forewarned that this is one of the most mismanaged properties I have ever seen. The Corporate office, down to the on site staff has HUGE, when I say HUGE I mean like nothing ever experienced.
Why I moved: They finally went from a manual rent collection process to an computer generated one they were suddenly after 6 months bombarding us with collection letters, greeting us on our doors. Ironically if the staff in the office entered your rent late in the computer system you paid late. I know it doesn t make sense and not your fault but the Corporate office was not even detailed enough to tell the staff it was a problem, let alone fix the system to account for a data entry delay. After nasty calls, angry tenants I put my foot down and got them to fix it only after threatening them with legal action or complaints to the BBB.
After I moved out:
I was NOT offered a final walk thru which is required by California State law but I was given a bill that said I owed them for replacement of two doors and all the mirrored closet doors and owed them $1500 bucks.
I had the original move in condition report . The bedroom mirrored closet doors had small cracks in the bottom corners that I noted. I really didn t mind, as they were not a hazard to me.
There was absolutely no damage to the unit or mirrored hall way closet doors or anything else and the pricing I was charged for the doors were inconsistent. All doors regardless of size the same price. Why the pricing for the mirror wardrobe closet doors either-the master bedrooms mirrored wardrobe closet door is 1/3 the size of the hallway door, be the same price' Who knows'
Only after threatening them with legal action or complaints to the BBB I receive a manual check in the sum of my deposit back.
We are not done yet .
I just received a collection notice that says that I owe them money for the stuff listed above .
YES REALLY. I send another email demanding that they fix this and that if I have to spend any time clearing this up with the outside collection agency, or if my credit is negatively effected in any way that I will plan to also take G&K to small claims court and demand three times my deposit back since you returned it late according to the State of California.
Who this building is for: Military, transient, low Mod (Low income), Senior, if you have no understanding of service or service is simply not important and if you like being treated like dog poop then this is the place is for you.
Who this building is not for: If you are a professional, like attorney, accountant, doctor, then you will soon be frustrated by the lack of professionalism and business acumen that these guys have.
Moral of the story: If you have good credit, and a decent job, look at some of the condo listings downtown, you will get better service at the same price or better with a washer and dryer in your unit.

Ok, I appreciate your entry, as before this, I considered this property. However, your portrayal that the Military has "...no understanding of service or service is simply not important to you and if you like being treated like dog poop..." and excluded from your higher tier of 'Professional' leads me to personally think that i'm glad that this happend to you. If, after almost 10 years of living here that *you didn't think to move* after you first encountered issues, you are not as smart as you think you are, a**hole. So i'm going to go ahead and check into this property FOR MY SELF and get MY OWN opinions. Have a great time in court.

Okay...lot's of interesting stuff going on in this review...lets try to clear a little of this up.
1. Note that in the article he says he recently moved out on Nov. 30, 2008. Now since he posted this on 2/2/08 and he says he was there from 1999-2007. He probably ment Nov. 30, 2007.
2. Now that we've established that... G&K no longer owns this property. It was bought by Equity Residential who is one of, if not the largest, property management company in the country. Now I don't know the exact date but as far as I can tell Equity took over the property sometime around the May 07. Every review I have ever seen of the property since the new management was established has been great. Oh??? and GK doesn't really do residential properties. They do a few but their real bag is business & retail real estate.
3. This means that the person who wrote this review not only had to live under the old management, but was still under a contract with the old management when the new management took over. He was caught in a horrible game between two companies and is in current litigation with a company that no longer even owns that property anymore. No one should ever have to go through something like this. My heart goes out to you and everyone else that had to go through the same ordeal. Now I'm sure the first post was either his girlfriend or a close friend since it was posted almost immediately after the review, that or it was someone else who went through the same horrible ordeal. Well, good luck with the trial and I hope things go better with your future apartments.

I agree the management at this apartment complex is less than friendly and the up-keep of the facilities is in need of attention. We had a decent/ friendly manager a year ago, but apparently she wasnt corporate enough so they fired her and hired a bulldog who has jacked up our rents. Dont move here lest you want to be angry all the time.

Want to have your rent increased in a down market with nothing to justify it. Move on in. My rent is being increased with with no new services, WTF.

To onthemove33: Hello. I'm having a similar problem with another apartment complex G&K owns. I was wondering what ended up happening in your situation. Please respond. Thanks!
