I'm renting a two-story townhouse. There's no one above or below me, but I share three side walls.
Construction: this was probably built around the 1970s. The air conditioner, oven, and stove are 70s technology. The plumbing seems to be shared amongst the apartments. If someone else takes a shower in another unit, you'll get blasts of hot and cold water. While old, everything works. I've never had many maintenance problems beside the shower thing.
Noise: you are right next to the 163 freeway. The windows provide little to no sound insulation. You will hear freeway traffic all day and night. If people are talking outside your apartment, you will hear them anywhere inside your apartment. Oh, and they can hear you too. I'm wake up every night at 2-3am because the sprinkles go off outside my window. The walls amplify bass sounds. I have a neighbor who loves to play music all the time and it gets so bad I have to leave the apartment. There's supposed to a security guard walking around checking for this sort of thing, but one time my neighbor had a giant, week-long, all night, every night festival on my front lawn and security never did a thing about it unless I called and complained. I had to call and complain every night because they wouldn't shut down the party.
Heat: the air conditioner, though being 70s, works. However, it only cools the first floor. The second floor will be very hot. It gets very warm inside the apartment, even during winter, so you will need to buy and air conditioner for the second floor.
Community: don't expect people to bring you cookies to welcome you to the neighborhood. People aren't very friendly here. Whenever I try and say hi to someone, they just stare at me and say nothing.
Parking: parking is ample and I've never had a problem finding a spot.
Grounds: the grounds are attractive and well-kept. However, there are bums who pick through the garbage dump every morning.
