I lived in Mission Knolls apartments for almost three years, and it was an excellent and affordable place.

Pros:
very good area - safe. Used to take regular walks with wife and year-old son.
Areas around are not run-down like Elcajon, yet the rent is competitive.
nice people / family environment / no hippies
regular maintainance to property twice a week (grass, cleaning, etc)
2 onsite maintainance technicians who live there 24-7 with families, so support is good
close to Qualcomm, HWY 15 and 8.
Apartments are spacious - my one bedroom apt. was 800 square feet.
There is a pool, playground, etc.
Gated parking

Cons:
- Apartment complex is old - I think 30 years.
- So interiors look old, carpets are not new.
- They might give you a great introductory rental, but increase the rent by $25 to $50 dollars every year until your paying about $950 dollars like everyone else. So factor that in when you're searching for apartments.
