Mixed Feelings!

Years at this apartment: 2000 - 2003
My wife and I chose this apartment since it was a very short drive from where I used to work (the complex opposite Piazza Carmel with the Shell Gas Station).
We were the first tenants in a brand new apartment, and our stay was reasonably pleasant, with a fabulous club house, pool, mini theater and gym. The complex also had a reasonably good business center, and organized some programs for children, including face-painting, a petting zoo, etc.
When we were shown around(actually chauffered around one of those fancy golf carts) we were told our apartment had a "nice mountain view"). It actually turned out to be a man-made embankment near a walking path!
We did, however, have a huge problem with mice. Though maintenance helped cover some obvious holes under the kitchen tap, the problem continued unabated. When we asked management, we were told, "we occupy their areas, so they are bound to come in".
We also did find that the mechanized gate at the entrance was often broken, and parking, especially during weekends was very full, forcing us to park near the office and walk quite a distance to our apartment.
However, we did not find noise or pets to be a major problem, at least not 5 years back!
When we moved at the end of 3 years, we made it a point to clean the carpets thoroughly and the entire apartment thoroughly, but were stuck with a huge bill (over $1.5K) ostensibly for replacement of the entire carpet (with no credit for the 3 years we stayed), and replacement of the garage wall -- which was in no way damaged. This was despite the fact that we had someone from the office walk through the place on the last day of our stay, and were verbally told there would not be any major charges!
Since we had already moved out of the country (the management knew this), we wrote several emails to the manager and the BRE Properties management, but got no responses. Since we had no effective way to fight this gross injustice, we had to very reluctantly pay since we did not want the complex to tar our apartment history.
We'd love to keep happy memories of the place since our only child was born when we lived here, but what the greedy management did at the end left a very sour taste in the mouth!
Since we haven't been back afterwards, we can't comment on many other posts about the deterioration of the place, but if they are even 50% true, that is very sad, indeed.
