If you are looking to save some money but still live in UTC, Trieste is a good complex for that. Yes, they are high priced, but for the area they are on the low end. That's just what it costs to live near UCSD and UTC.
There are two main problems I had with this complex, road noise and no light. Our bedroom window is right on La Jolla Village Drive, so there is never a time of day that we can go to bed without hearing road noise. We are also on the first floor so there is just nothing to do about it. Also, because we are on the first floor, there is a very high wall outside our balcony, presumably to block road noise, since LJVD is right there, but that means we get VERY little light. Make sure you see your actual unit before moving in, since many of them won't suffer from this problem.
As mentioned by others, the bath tubs are moldy. But when there is a problem with the apartment, maintanence comes quickly. We even had someone come at 4am when our disposal started backing up for no reason. That is a problem, but if you notice it happening, they come quickly to deal with it. We've never had a real flood.
Also, know that management doesn't sign for packages. If you aren't home when something comes, you'll have to drive about 10 minutes away to get to the post office where they hold it. There is also no A/C in any of the units, which is a big issue for about 3 months of the year.
The good: we have a washer and dryer in the unit!, the kitchen is LARGE and has a great amount of cabinet space (rare in San Diego), we have 2 assigned parking spots included in the rent (although they are tandem), and cell phone reception (at least for Sprint) is great.
Mostly, we're moving out because I'm tired of the road noise and we can now afford to live somewhere a little nicer.
