I've had my share of experiences as far as outrageous rent increases are concerned, so I was prepared for the worst when I visited the VoR office today to inquire about my new lease terms. Let's face it, often times these types of apartment communities lure you in with attractive deals, which are inevitably followed by hefty rate hikes once you're settled and your lease expires. Not so at the VoR, apparently, and to my great surprise. My current rate for a 1BR is $1,550. If I renew, it will go up to $1,580 - a tiny 2% increase to keep up with inflation. This is by far the most fair renewal offer I've received during my 8 years in California, and I give VoR a lot of credit for it. Before I moved to San Diego, I lived at a not-so-great community in Newport Beach. My lease went up by $100 every year. Prior to Newport, I lived up in the Bay Area. Back in 2000, I got a letter from the apartment manager stating that my monthly dues will be adjusted from $1,285 to $1,635. Needless to say, I told her to !#@&*! my '!$%& and moved out. But my point is, as indicated in the subject line, this is really the first time I'm not taking abuse by a greedy landlord and for that reason alone I would like to endorse the VoR community. Only thing I really hate is the much-debated Cable TV company, these guys are a total disaster and ought to be shut down.
