I lived in there for about two years.
First off, they helped me out...I had horrible credit at the time, and with some references' help, and good work history, I got in. (I never missed a rent payment, and was refunded my full deposit when I left, so I have no issues there).
Yes the prices ARE high, but try finding anything in SF for less....just about impossible. To that end, while expensive, they are competitive.
Location is kinda rough, near the tenderloin, but the transit options are plentiful. I never experienced, or saw, any crime.
Noise (from the street) WAS an issue, even way up on the 21st floor. Sirens, drunks, wackos, etc, at all hours. Soundproofing could be way better.
Neighbors were great. Elevators are limited though, so budget a few minutes of waiting time.
That said, I would move back, if I could figure out how to deal with the noise; everything else was OK.
